Chaverim of Queens is a volunteer-driven organization established in January 2008, beginning with just 10 volunteers handling a few calls daily. Today, it boasts nearly 100 dedicated members who respond to thousands of assistance requests throughout Queens and extend their services to areas like Long Island and Roslyn. Operating 24 hours a day, six days a week, Chaverim provides vital non-medical emergency assistance to the community.
The organization's core services include addressing flat tires, car and home lockouts, jump-starting dead batteries, and delivering fuel to stranded motorists. They also respond to situations involving children accidentally locked in vehicles. Beyond these, Chaverim volunteers assist in various emergencies, such as severe weather events, where they have been instrumental in rescuing individuals from hazardous conditions like floodwaters.
Chaverim's commitment to chesed is evident in their proactive initiatives. They conduct pre-winter car checkups to ensure vehicle safety and run a "Don't Drink and Drive" campaign during Purim, offering safe transportation to prevent accidents. Additionally, they participate in local search efforts for missing persons when called upon. All services are provided free of charge, reflecting their dedication to community welfare.
The organization operates entirely through volunteer efforts, with no paid staff, and relies on donations to fund equipment and operations. Volunteers are equipped with essential tools like booster packs, air compressors, and lockout kits to efficiently assist those in need.
