Community Safety
Flatbush, Brooklyn, NY, USA
Flatbush Shomrim Safety Patrol (FSSP) is a volunteer-based organization operating in the Flatbush neighborhood of Brooklyn, dedicated to ensuring the safety and well-being of the local community. Established over three decades ago, FSSP comprises trained volunteers who respond to various incidents, including criminal activity, missing persons, and domestic emergencies. They maintain a 24/7 emergency hotline, handling over 6,000 calls annually, which has led to numerous arrests for crimes such as assaults, burglaries, and thefts.
One of FSSP's key services is their Search & Rescue (SAR) operations. The SAR team is composed of seasoned professionals ready to mobilize swiftly in cases involving missing individuals, including children, dementia patients, and those with special needs. Utilizing a fully equipped 33-foot Mobile Command Center, the team coordinates closely with other Shomrim branches, Hatzalah, and law enforcement agencies to conduct efficient search operations, boasting a near-perfect success rate in locating missing persons.
FSSP also addresses domestic emergencies, responding to situations such as runaways, spousal abuse, and individuals in crisis. Their approach emphasizes discretion and safety, with protocols in place to de-escalate active situations and provide victims with access to additional resources once immediate dangers are mitigated. The organization's commitment extends to proactive street patrols, crime prevention efforts, and collaboration with the NYPD, enhancing community security through visible presence and rapid response.
Additionally, FSSP is prepared to assist during severe weather conditions, offering support for issues like flooded basements and power outages. Their Mobile Command Center serves as a charging station and provides temporary shelter and heat for those in need. On Shabbos and Yom Tov, FSSP ensures community safety through dedicated patrols, aligning their services with the community's needs and values.
