Tomchei Shabbos of Lakewood
Food Support
Location Served: Lakewood
Tomchei Shabbos is a large kosher food pantry serving families experiencing economic hardship in New Jersey and beyond. Since 1986, it has provided basic kosher food provisions to thousands of disadvantaged households, including large families and those facing temporary crises such as job loss, illness, or other financial strain. The organization emphasizes discreet support for families across the spectrum of communal affiliations, with a focus on preserving dignity while ensuring pantries are stocked.
Its primary relief framework is built around structured food distribution programs. The Monthly Distribution Program supplies a full month’s worth of basic food staples and essentials, with individualized family parcels—sometimes as many as 15 cartons for large families—packed and shipped or picked up. The Weekly Distribution Program provides smaller packages designed for small families or elderly individuals who may not have the space to store bulk quantities. In both programs, food is purchased at wholesale prices and packed by volunteers into family-specific parcels.
Additional programs address ongoing Shabbos and Yom Tov needs as well as general pantry support. The My Shabbos Family subscription allows for regular Shabbos packages to be provided to local families on a monthly basis, creating a consistent framework for their Shabbos meals. For Sukkos, Pesach, and Shavuos, the Yom Tov Food Relief Program supplies generous amounts of essential items through pre-holiday bulk orders and one-day volunteer packing events. Tomchei Shabbos also runs a Biannual Bulk Food Sale to make discounted pantry staples more accessible, and a RoundUp Program that channels small change from everyday purchases into additional food support.
A key distinctive feature of Tomchei Shabbos is its scale and infrastructure. The organization operates from a 3,800-square-foot distribution center and is powered by more than 350 volunteers who manage ordering, warehousing, processing, and delivery. Recent figures highlight 5,100 families receiving ongoing services, 88,200 individuals fed annually (including 69,000 children), and over 7.1 million pounds of food distributed in a single year, including substantial quantities of poultry and produce. These systems enable Tomchei Shabbos to maintain both efficiency and discretion while serving as the largest kosher food pantry in New Jersey.
