Chesed of Flatbush
Medical Support
Location Served: Brooklyn
Chesed of Flatbush is a community organization that supports individuals and families dealing with a wide range of medically related challenges, with a particular focus on non-emergency situations. It was founded in 2020, during the COVID pandemic, in response to the need for a community-based framework to help people manage medical difficulties that may be overwhelming but are not urgent emergencies. The organization was formed by local medical professionals and community activists who sought to create a central address for medically related assistance across the community.
One core area of service is medical equipment. Chesed of Flatbush maintains a fully stocked warehouse of specialized equipment for patients who cannot obtain what they need due to timing, insurance delays, or lack of coverage. Available items include hospital beds, adult and pediatric wheelchairs, oxygen pumps, walkers, commodes, and various lift and mobility devices. All equipment is assembled and delivered directly to the patient’s home, which can ease the logistical burden on families and, in some cases, allow patients to remain at home rather than in a medical facility.
The organization also provides patient advocacy for those navigating hospitalizations or illness. Recognizing that the healthcare system and insurance issues can be confusing and stressful, Chesed of Flatbush offers guidance to help patients pursue appropriate care and treatment. A 24-hour hotline is staffed by advocates and liaisons who provide inpatient and outpatient referrals, share practical advice, and connect callers with suitable doctors and medical resources for a variety of situations.
A distinctive feature of Chesed of Flatbush is the way it brings together existing communal resources under one framework. Its leadership includes coordinators from Flatbush Hatzolah, Flatbush Shomrim, and other long-time community activists, allowing the organization to draw on extensive experience and connections in responding to medical needs. By combining medical equipment support with patient advocacy and community networking, Chesed of Flatbush functions as a central address for non-emergency medical support within the community.
